A Comprehensive Guide to a Mobile Car Wash – Machines & Supplies

April 19th, 2011

A mobile car wash company is an attractive business opportunity for professional cleaning companies. The market for this service is ever growing. Fleet maintenance companies who own or manage a large fleet of vehicles often seek the help of mobile cleaning professionals to keep their vehicles clean on site. Additionally, many large companies offer auto detailing services as a perk to employees by contracting out a mobile auto detailer.

Since mobile car detailing is a field of immense growth, many cleaning professionals are seeking entry. However, it is important to recognize that mobile cleaning is quite different from standard detailing at a car wash facility. Let’s examine why.

An Overview of Auto Detailing

The process of cleaning vehicles is a more complex process than other cleaning jobs. The main difficulty is the wide variety of surface types.

The exterior metal parts and body of a vehicle are hard and durable. One requires a powerful cleaning machine, such as a pressure washer, for cleaning the engine components and exterior of the vehicle. In addition, the oil and fuel stains on the engine components are not easy to remove with less powerful machines.

However, most of the interior surfaces of a vehicle are soft. For example, seat upholstery, mats, and carpets are made of soft materials. Powerful pressure washers are not suitable for cleaning such surfaces, as their high output pressure will damage and soak them. As such, interior detailing requires a specific type of cleaning machine – a carpet extractor or carpet cleaner.

Mobile auto detailers not only have to have the right equipment to clean vehicles, they must be able to transport this equipment easily. As such, mobility is key. The following are brief descriptions of the ideal systems for mobile automobile cleaning.

Pressure Washers

Pressure cleaners are essential for cleaning the exterior hard surfaces of automobiles. Pressure washers pump water or steam at high pressure levels onto the surface to blast away stains and impurities. These machines are ideal for removing oil stains, chemical blots, petroleum residues, mud, grease, tree sap, bird splatters, and more from automotive exteriors.

However, one must consider the specifications of pressure washers for auto detailing: that is, output pressure level, output temperature, and flow rate. Ideally, the output pressure level of pressure washers must be less than or equal to 1500 psi. A higher pressure level may harm the surface, while a pressure level too low may not clean effectively.

Output temperature is important as well. Steam output is the best for a mobile car wash. If steam is not an option, hot water should be used. Using a cold water machine will cause you to use extra water, resulting in excess run off. And, when traveling to a customer’s place of business, this is not an option.

Excess runoff is also a result of high flow rates. Therefore, moderate to low flow rates are ideal for cleaning automobiles in remote locations.

Carpet Cleaners

Carpet cleaners are also part of the auto detailing supplies needed. These are used mainly for cleaning the mats, seat upholstery, and other interior parts of a vehicle.

One must select a carpet cleaner that makes use of low flow technology. Otherwise, the seats and carpets of the vehicles will not dry as quickly as the vehicle owner wants. Also, damp carpets can lead to mold or mildew growth, particularly in environments with little air flow as with automobiles.

Carpet extractors are also available in heated or non-heated configurations. For the greatest cleaning power, purchase a heated carpet cleaner with temperatures up to 210?F.

Green Chemicals

Green chemicals are ideal for portable car wash services. These chemicals help in removing dirt and other impurities, but do not cause any harm to the vehicle, the people who travel in the vehicle, or the environment. It is better to select green products that are completely sourced from plants and readily biodegradable. Be on the look out for advanced green technologies that improve the cleaning power of these solutions.

Add Products to Your Service Business to Expand Your Profit Potential

April 17th, 2011

A purely service business idea can be very advantageous startup option. The cost to launch is generally lower than product-based startups and the preparations generally require less lead time. However, the downside is that a pure service venture is inherently limited in sales potential. That is, your maximum possible sales are limited by the number of hours you are able to turn in to billable work. The best way to improve profitability in a service-based industry is to add complementary physical product to your offering.

Most services lend themselves to adding physical product, whether a single item or a line of appropriate add-ons. Some examples:

Landscaping/Lawn Service — Resale of specialty plants; landscape materials such as tiles, bricks, timbers; decorative lawn items; indoor garden setups; door mats Carpet Cleaning: Door mats; spot cleaner; air freshener Auto Detailing: Auto wipes; auto storage accessories; emergency road kits; auto scents Business Consultant: Time-management systems; software; customized forms; office organization supplies Massage Therapist: Aromatherapy supplies; stress balls; books; relaxation music cds; body lotions

The advantage of adding physical product to your service is obvious — you can increase sales without increasing your customer base. Don’t worry about seeming pushy in upselling your clients. As long as the products you offer make sense with your services and benefit the customer in a clearly defined manner, most will appreciate you making their lives a bit easier. And, offering physical product is quickly becoming the norm. Training consultants sell their workbooks to the trainees, national carpet cleaning companies offer entire catalogs of products to protect your carpet between cleanings, and doctors sell basic supplies out of the office. As long as the products you sell are directly related to what you do, your customers won’t think anything of you leaving a brochure or telling them about your products.

If you are not sure what might work for your particular service business, start by checking out the competition. Even if you serve only your community, look outside your area for similar companies and see what they have added to their sales efforts. Check your trade association for ideas as well. Brainstorm a list of complementary businesses and products — what else fits in and around your niche? All hair salons (formerly a purely service venture) now sell hair and skin care products as standard…and expect around 20% to 30% of their gross sales to come from the physical products! If your business is dog training, complementary companies would include dog sitters, veterinarians, pet food suppliers, dog sports companies, and the like. Consider whether the products they offer could be easily integrated into your service business. If your business is training or consulting, brainstorm products you could develop as add-ons to help your trainees maintain the lessons you teach. Whatever your service, be creative in identifying potential physical product to increase sales.

Talk to your current clients about your plan to add physical product. You may be surprised at the great ideas they come up with. Test a variety of products and brands. Survey your clients and always be looking for opportunities to add new revenue streams. Think big — a line of products that increases your bottom line by 20% or more makes a huge difference over time!

What is Auto Detailing?

April 17th, 2011

The polishing, waxing and cleaning of an automobile on the inside as well as the outside is called auto detailing. The auto detailing should be thorough enough to consider the automobile of show quality when the work is done. There are at least a couple of reasons why people have such intense car cleaning done and that is to satisfy themselves or to show the car. To bring your car to an auto show its appearance has to be flawless. Auto detailing, if done correctly, can preserve the car thereby giving it a longer life. It also increases the value of the car in the event of a sale.

Professional detailers are usually the ones that do the best job. Many are franchise operations while others are independent ones that work out of their garages, vacant parking lots, or other unused places and do not have permanent business addresses. There are bout fifty thousand of them in the United States however; this kind of work is not exclusive to the United States. In the United Kingdom auto detailers are known as “car valets” and the work they do is known as “car or auto valeting.”

There are many auto detailing supplies necessary to do the job. For the exterior, you have to make the paint shine, the chrome trim shine, the windows should be clean and scratches should be removed, and the wheels and tires should also be cleaned to look as if they were new. The supplies used by auto detailers include: ordinary detergents, specific detail clay, a variety of waxes and polishes, special cloths and applicators made of various fibers and consistencies.

There are three things that auto detailers do when detailing an automobile and that is to clean, polish and protect the automobile. It has to be cleaned of all the clinging dirt and debris such as bug carcasses that have adhered to the car, heavy dirt and tar and all other contaminants that have been picked up over time and may harm the exterior of the car. A thorough cleaning ensures that all of the clinging dirt and droppings are cleaned and there is no sign of them ever being there. Auto detailing is beyond a simple washing.

Although there is not as much to clean when auto detailing the interior, it is just as precise. They concentrate on the cleaning of the upholstery, carpeting and in particular the passenger side of the car. Vacuuming is a standard procedure in detailing the interior. Much of the interior is steam cleaned. A liquid cleaner and various brushes are used to remove stains from carpeting and upholstery and the non porous surfaces are polished.

Body work such as painting the car, mechanical work on the car and upholstery repair is not included as part of auto detailing. Although, some will do some engine detailing such as steam cleaning or pressure cleaning, degreasing and using degreasers to clean beneath the hood.

How the Right Auto Detailing Supplies Can Cut Down Water Consumption

April 16th, 2011

Traditional mobile car wash businesses have always set aside a large part of their budget for water utility payments and costs related to collection and disposal of dirty water as part of post car wash cleanup. These businesses use large amounts of water and must recycle them in waste bins for proper disposal to eliminate being fined by the EPA. Not only water treatment post-cleaning, but also availability of water becomes a concern for many mobile car washing businesses, which have to visit client locations for washing cars. The client may not like their parking area to be left wet with dirty water.

There is a sensible solution to these problems: reducing water consumption. With less water used, less money is needed for clean up. This also reduces water bills. Besides decreasing costs for your mobile car washing business, reduced water use also has a huge environment impact. You can further minimize damage to the environment by using plant-derived auto detailing supplies instead of chemical-based detergents for cleaning upholstery, seats, engines, wheels, windscreen, exterior, and other car parts.

There is a third benefit of using less water. Machines with low flow technologies use less water, allowing carpets to dry faster. This is important because moist carpets encourage the growth of germs and mold and lead to unhygienic conditions and bad odor inside the car if left damp for extended periods of time.

Different Types of Low Flow Vehicle Detailing Equipment

We have listed the benefits of low flow auto detailing products. There are essentially two types of low flow machines for car cleaning: pressure washers and carpet cleaners.

When purchasing a portable car wash machine, such as a pressure washer, pay attention to the amount of water needed for cleaning. Most machines have flow rates between 2 and 5 GPM. Low flow machines, on the other hand, restrict the water flow to as little as 0.5 GPM.

Heat is another important factor in these machines. High temperatures can remove grease, ice, oil residues, and stains, which water at lower temperature cannot. Steam pressure washers, for example, can reach 300°F to virtually melt away stubborn deposits on vehicles. Pressure level is another important consideration, as it should not exceed 1500 psi to ensure the safety of vehicle surfaces.

These machines not only use less water, but also lower pressure levels to prevent damage to the car body. These mobile car wash machines can be used for cleaning the engine, windows, painted surfaces, wheels, tires, and other parts. Many auto detailing machines can even be used for steam cleaning, the only difference from traditional steam cleaners being that they use wet steam instead of dry vapor. This is a very important feature for mobile car washing services, because dry steam damages the painted surface when the user is forced to repeatedly rub it with detailing brushes to achieve cleanliness. Low flow machines, therefore, offer the same or greater benefits to mobile car washing services as machines with higher flow rates.

While low flow pressure cleaners are ideal for exterior cleaning, low flow carpet cleaners are the ultimate solution to interior detailing. Some low flow carpet cleaners, for example, use water at 210°F to achieve proper cleaning even in the absence of gallons of water. Such high temperatures work effectively to dissolve stains and residues settled deep within carpet and upholstery fibers. This does not mean that all low flow machines necessarily feature high temperatures. You can purchase non-heated machines if your carpet cleaning requirements are limited to basic dust, dirt, or odor removal.

Low flow technology within carpet extractors also enhances drying time. By using less water without reducing cleaning, carpets can be cleaned while left to dry in 2-6 hours. This is in contrast to the 24 hours required by conventional shampooers, a time frame that may lead to the development of mold, mildew, bacteria, and pungent odors.

An added cleaning solution is important when selecting carpet cleaners, as it is required for complete care. Green carpet cleaning formulas are suggested, as they work to dissolve, encapsulate, and crystallize dirt particles for complete extraction. Pre-spray carpets with the solution and let dwell before applying the carpet cleaner for best results.

Whether you are seeking machines to clean the interior or exterior of vehicles, remember that low flow technology is key.
